Yes, you need a bribe. Popcorn will do. Then you need to plunk yourself down in front of the same  computer you’re sitting at right now. Next, grab your “reluctant” reader and plunk ‘em one on your lap. Share the popocorn. And begin by reading the first two (FREE) DaVinchy Chapter Series Books out loud.

You do the reading. Don’t force the game, Mama. You got this little fish on a hook and all you have to do now is reel ‘em in. That’s right reel ‘em in real slow.

Maybe talk about the pictures. Ham up the reading a little. Give it your “A” game as a reader. Ask one question about what ’s going to happen next. Don’t fake it. Don’t force it. Just enjoy it.

2 Fun Not 2 Read

Ok,  now when you get to the end of book 2 you have the hook fully set. Trust me on this one. This little kid on your lap with the popcorn bits clinging to shirt front – this little kid WANTS to read the third book. I mean WANTS  absolutely with all his (or her) action-craving, cliff-hanger-busting heart to know what happens next.

Be cool. Try not to giggle.

Now open the third book on your computer, just as casual as you can be. Then take a great big handful of popcorn and jam it in your mouth. And kind of spitting out popcorn as you speak, you say, “You read the first chapter to me. I’ll read the second to you.”

Excited Boy Reads!

Ok, swallow the popcorn. Try not to choke. Because those words coming out of your little one’s mouth are the sounds that good, practiced, excited readers make when reading out loud.

Help out with the hard words. Comment on the story and be engaged. But take notice. Yes, maam. Your little one’s reading like the best of them. Reluctant reader no more. You and your young ‘un are on a reading roll that’s just beginning.
