Third grader sinks teeth into book – reading results!

Looking for a chapter book to get your third grader going? Chances are you have a wonderful special  kid on your hands. Maybe he’s full of too much energy and can’t sit still? Every third grader I know is on the computer. Chatting. Playing games. Plugged in. The challenge is just to convert some of that fun-loving energy into a reading learning mode, right. That’s a big part of the reason the DaVinchy Chapter Book Series was designed to be read online – on the computer.

There is Magic in the Pictures and Words

Sometimes third graders or their parents can get their noses in the air about a “picture book.” Afterall, aren’t third graders supposed to be reading longer books without pictures. Hopefully, you aren’t letting a little kid prejudice hold you back. I mean, take a look at your favorite magazine and tell me how much you enjoy reading when fun pictures help illustrate the points made in the articles.

You see my point, right?

Pictures make reading easier and fun, too. They help adults, they help kids. It’s just second and third graders, primarily, who seem to have developed this prejudice about reading picture books. Gosh, take a look at your kid’s text books. The trend in text books has been toward more and more color pictures to illustrate the concepts. This has turned from an isolated perspective that I seemed to have alone – into an absolute movement in education.  I think the Doris Kinserling Company’s EyeWitness Series of books that are so heavily picture-dependant were at the forefront of this movement. They indeed opened everyone’s eyes to what could be done to use pictures to interest, and entertain, and amuse and engage kids in learning.

In our own humble way, we want to bring the same fun, picture-with-words experience to fiction reading.

I’ll tell you a secret. The only reason you don’t see color pictures in chapter books is that they are too expensive to produce! But we see times changing. Heck, we are being the change we want to see. Kids love the computer. They are glued to their computers.  Let ‘em read books with pictures on their computers where there is no added cost for color!

That’s why the computer, the Kindle, and now the iPad were created, right?
